DEAD COLD MYSTERIES

GENRE: CRIME / MYSTERY / DETECTIVE

Detective John Stone of the NYPD has the best arrest record in the 43rd precinct. But he’s a dinosaur who belongs to another age. Detective Carmen Dehan has such a bad attitude that nobody at the precinct can stomach her. Captain Jennifer Cuevas wants them both out of the way and thinks they make a perfect pair. So she gives them the Cold Cases file – the cases nobody gives a damn about. She has no idea just how hot a cold case can get. Ten years back Nelson Hernandez and his four cousins were playing poker in a dive at Hunts Point. Somebody came in, blew them away and beheaded and castrated Nelson, leaving his head and his balls on the table. There was no shortage of suspects, the Jersey Mob, the Triads from Manhattan, or the 43rds own bent cop, Mick Harragan. But nobody was ever charged, and the night of the murder Mick Harragan went missing with Nelson’s wife, Maria. Now Stone and Dehan plan to find him – whatever the consequences…

GENRE: ACTION / ESPIONAGE / THRILLER

Ten years in the British SAS have turned Lacklan Walker into a supreme killing machine. That, and his twisted, dysfunctional family. His father, a Boston Brahmin Billionaire, taught him how to hate. His English Aristocrat mother taught him he didn’t belong. And when his only friend and childhood sweetheart, Marni, wanted to teach him how to love, he walked away from her, knowing all he would ever be good at was killing, and war. Now, Robert Walker, his father has called him back to Boston from Wyoming, because Marni has gone missing. But before Lacklan can go looking for her, Walker has to tell him the truth: the truth about who he is, what he has done, who has taken Marni…and why: the truth about Omega. And that truth unleashes in Lacklan a rage, a rage that will not be sated until he has hunted down and killed each and every one of his enemies. This is the dawn of the hunter…

ABOUT BLAKE

My parents were well-meaning Marxists who decided to have me home schooled. To do that they employed what my mother called a ‘governess’, a live in tutor-cum-factotum. While she tried to teach me the Greek alphabet, I was busy memorizing the parts of the gun, ancient weapons and studying Budo. I also bunked off at every opportunity and went to help out at the stables across the road, or practice Tae Kwon Do with my pal, Rafael. After two years the governess became an alcoholic and vanished one night without a trace. I still feel maybe it was my fault.

I got my first job at sixteen, breaking in wild horses. It wasn’t the only thing I broke. A few bones snapped and crunched along the way too. The next few years after that are a closed book. I traveled a lot, saw a lot of life, and death, had a lot of fun and made some good friends. Along the way I developed a passion for storytelling. Being dyslexic made me determined to master writing and with the help of NLP and Raja yoga, I did it – or at least I’m doing it. Reading was never a problem, but writing was.

Stone and Dehan, and the indestructible Lacklan Walker, were all born of my love of the noir genre. As a kid, when I wasn’t being forced to read Karl Marx’s Das Capital, I was usually reading Mickey Spillane, Dashiell Hammett or the great Raymond Chandler. I loved detective stories of all types, but Marlow, Hammer and the Continental Op were always where it was at for me. They were my real mentors and tutors.

These days I live alone on a mountain with my cat. It’s peaceful up here, among the golden eagles, and that’s a good thing. And if the ghosts ever try to come and find me, I can see them coming from afar. When that happens, I pull out a pack of Camels, pop the cork on the Bushmills, and sit and wait for them to arrive.

DAWN OF THE HUNTER

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 1

VERDUGO DAWN

VERDUGO SERIES - BOOK 1

Who are you when you don’t know who you are? What do you do when you wake up in the middle of the New Mexico desert, staring through the windshield of a Cherokee jeep, and you have no idea why you are there or how you got there? What do you do when you wake up in the desert with no past and no identity, when the only thing driving you is the question, who am I? That and a compulsion; a compulsion you can’t understand: the compulsion to kill. When that happens you begin to walk the night, on the dark side. You stalk your prey, and you discover it is one special prey you are after, one special prey you want to track down and execute. It’s the guy with the black shades and the beemer, the guy at the club with the two gorillas and the six girls, the guy with soulless eyes they all come to see for their fix. It’s the dealer. The dealers have to die. And when the executions start, they finally give you a name, an identity. They call you, The Verdugo. The Executioner.

DOUBLE EDGED BLADE

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 2

When SAS vet. Lacklan Walker buries his father at the family graveyard in New England, the last person he expects to see at the funeral is his childhood friend and sweetheart, Marni - the woman who’d killed his father. To make things more complicated, his father’s dying wish was that Lacklan should look after her and protect her. Because Marni is on a mission, a mission to bring down the shadowy organization called Omega, the government within a government, a mission that might just save Mankind. But when Lacklan tracks her down to Tucson, Arizona, his biggest enemy turns out to be his own passion, his own need for redemption. A need that leads him astray and drags him ever deeper, as avenger and executioner, into the cross-border trade in crack cocaine and young Mexican prostitutes. But will his blind hunger for justice drive him to forget his promise to his father? Will it lead him to make the biggest mistake of his life – a mistake that could have disastrous consequences not just for him and Marni, but for the world…?

THE STORM

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 3

Hurricane Sarah, the largest in recorded history, is howling in off the Atlantic, straight toward New Orleans - and Lacklan Walker is headed for the eye of the storm. His father’s dying wish was that he keep Marni safe, but Marni has sworn to bring down Omega, the government-within-the government, and that is anything but safe. Now she has disappeared and Lacklan has reason to think she might be following Hurricane Sarah. But en route to the Big Easy things get complicated when Lacklan discovers that Bat Hayes, a comrade from the British SAS, has been charged with murder in the small Louisiana town of Burgundy – right in the path of the storm. Lacklan knows what he has to do, he has to go to his comrade. But when he gets to Burgundy things are not so simple. This is a murder Hayes could not have committed, yet his prints are at the scene and all over the murder weapon, plus Lacklan knows he is keeping a secret, a secret about the victim...about Sarah Carmichael. As the sky turns black and the storm gathers, it seems Sarah is about to unleash unholy havoc…

THE HAND OF WAR

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 4

SAS veteran Lacklan Walker has been searching for Marni. She murdered his father, but his father’s dying wish was that Lacklan should keep her safe; safe from Omega, the government-within-the government, whose plans for humanity Marni has sworn to expose. And that is anything but safe. Now the UN in New York is hosting an international conference on global warming and overpopulation. Marni will be delivering a key paper. Lacklan knows that paper will be dynamite, and Omega will be gunning for her. What he doesn’t know is that Abdul Abbassi, the Butcher of Helmand, is also there, and his intention is not to keep anybody safe. His intention is to rain bloody fire and death down on the conference – and the city. Long ago Lacklan swore to kill Abbassi, now is his chance, but time is running out and if he is to save Marni - and thousands more – he will have to play a dangerous double game with Omega: Omega of the Dark Agenda, Omega, who move the subtle Hand of War…

A HARVEST OF BLOOD

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 5

It should have been a simple drive, from San Francisco International Airport, to Boulder, Wyoming, despite the snow. Was it because Lacklan was tired? Was it because he was thinking about the woman he loved, or the international crisis he had recently caused? Or was it the crazy blizzard that came out of nowhere and blinded him? Whatever it was, it made him turn the wrong way, it made him turn onto Bloody Creek Road, to the ghost town of Independence, population twenty-five. He should have stayed the night and moved on; he should have ignored the fact that fifteen year-old Peggy, found dead by the side of the road, had been murdered, not just run down, like the locals said. He should have left when Joe Vasco, the farm manager, and the good folk of Independence, told him to. But Lacklan was never real good at doing what he was told. So he decided to stay, and look into things. Because Lacklan knew better than anybody, that as you sow, so you reap, and he had decided, whoever killed Peggy, was going to reap a harvest of blood…

TO RULE IN HELL

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 6

The call came on a Sunday morning in March, in Independence: Go to Seattle, meet a man, he will give you instructions. But those instructions send Lacklan on a journey he could not have suspected, protecting a senator who might be the last best hope of mankind, fleeing before the storm, hunted by killers and law enforcement alike. And when he finally reaches his destination, he discovers his ordeal has only just begun… But Lacklan, after ten years in the SAS, after a life of killing, has had enough. He had promised his father, on his deathbed, that he would protect Marni, the love of his life, in her fight against Omega, the ruthless government within a government. But he has grown tired, tired of chasing the impossible dream, tired of the killing. He is ready to break his promise. Now he dreams of home in Independence, of a normal life with a good woman. Yet that may be the most impossible dream of all, for a man who was not born to serve in Heaven, but to rule in Hell…

KILL: ONE

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 7

It started with a dream. A dream where the hunter was hunted by a baying pack lusting for blood and power. And when he awoke from that dream, Lacklan Walker, ten year veteran of the SAS, knew his days of killing were not over yet. They would never be over until the pack was dead. This would be a mission like none other. Now he would answer to nobody but himself. He could have no allies, no support, no back up, because what he was going to do was nothing less than assassination. Murder. To protect his family, for the good of the nation and perhaps the world, Lacklan must go to LA, to Hollywood; take upon himself the triple mantle of Judge, Jury and Executioner – and there assassinate one of the country’s best loved household names: writer, director and producer of the USA’s most popular TV series, Aaron Fenninger… Also known as Epsilon, Omega’s No 5. Kill: One.

POWDER BURN

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 8

It is almost two years since Lacklan walker, veteran Captain with the British SAS, helped Carmen Vazquez escape from the clutches of the Sinaloa Cartel in Arizona. He never expected to hear from her again, and he certainly never expected to hear from her brother. So when Lacklan receives a text message claiming to be from Charlie Vazquez, saying that he is in New York, that his life is in danger and that he needs help, Lacklan is intrigued, to say the least. But when Lacklan gets to New York, the mystery only deepens - and the more he investigates, the deeper it gets. Charlie has vanished without a trace, and so have his closest friends: Zack the mathematical genius whose brain works with the speed of a computer, Bran whose memory is beyond photographic, and Hans and Hattie, whose powers of empathy and analysis seem almost supernatural. Who are they? Where have they gone? And what have they done with Charlie Vazquez…? And then again, who is Dr Olga Lucia Salcedo - The extraordinarily beautiful lecturer at Columbia university, whose relationship with Charlie seems to have been more than just mere mentoring…?

DAWN OF THE HUNTER

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 9

Chaos is creeping in on Lacklan’s life like an infection into an open wound. And that chaos all seems to come from one place, Omega: Omega the ruthless, shadowy government within a government, Omega that he had sworn to destroy, Omega whose leaders he had sworn to kill, in order to protect his family, his wife and her children. But it seems that however many members of Omega he kills, more keep swarming up, like rats out of a sewer. And now it looks like even the ones he’s killed are coming back. Chaos is turning into a nightmare. After ten years in the British SAS, there is one thing Lacklan has learned well: if somebody brings chaos to your world, then you unleash unholy hell on theirs. So now Lacklan is on the hunt, and that hunt will take him halfway across the world, to Brussels, Paris, Madrid and the remote mountains of Cadiz to find his quarry. And when he finds them, they will learn all about chaos, and unholy hell…

UNLEASHED

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 10

Captain Lacklan Walker, ten-year veteran of the British SAS, has delivered a devastating blow to his arch enemies, Omega, the shadowy world government that has been manipulating world affairs, guiding them toward a single, inescapable catastrophic event out of which they would rise supreme. But now they are crippled, all but finished… But so is Lacklan. The fight has cost him dear. He has lost everything that was most precious to him. Badly hurt he withdraws to Galveston Island, in the Gulf of Mexico, to the beach house his parents took him to as a kid. There he plans to visit old friends, lick his wounds and heal in the sun and the sea: rediscover himself. What he discovers is Emily, the daughter his old friend Harry Burgess never knew he had, Emily who has a dark and secret past she will not reveal, Emily who is terrified and fleeing – but from whom, or what…? One thing is clear to Lacklan: he will not repeat past mistakes. His heart is hardened, and when the time comes to fight, as come it must, the destroyer within him will be unleashed…

THE OMICRON KILL

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 11

What do you do when hatred is the only thing that gives your life meaning, and your enemy is dead?

Lacklan Walker, ten-year veteran of the British SAS, made a promise to his dying father: he would bring down the secret organization known as Omega, the shadowy government within a government that ran world affairs. He also promised he would care for Marni, his childhood sweetheart. But Marni has betrayed him and Omega is all but destroyed.

His enemy is dead and his life no longer has meaning.

Then his old friends Redbeard and Njal tell him one last Omega cell survives in Mexico: Deep in the jungles of Sinaloa Felipe Gonzalez, Samuel ‘el Vampiro’ Zapata and General Francisco Ochoa are building a lab above Cosalá. Lacklan knows it is time to strike the death blow, but is it honour - or is it hatred?

Lacklan only knows he must Kill General Ochoa, the man known as Omicron - before it is too late.

9mm JUSTICE

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 12

Ex SAS Captain Lacklan Walker can’t catch a break. After two tough years his arch enemy, Omega, the shadowy government within a government, are broken and Lacklan is drifting, trying to heal, heading slowly home. That’s how he winds up in Tucson, Arizona, just in time to witness a drive by shooting in which beautiful, innocent, eighteen year-old Celeste Martinez, gets gunned down and dies, holding Lacklan’s hand, staring into his eyes - in Cora’s Golden Café parking lot, a hundred and fifty yards from the Santa Cruz Tucson PD Station. In a town drowning in the black tide of Mexican drugs trafficking, the gangs make the law, and enforce it with guns. In the Fairgrounds district of Tucson, those gangs are the Iluminados and the Santos del Diablo, and the cops know better than to get in their way. But Lacklan knows that one of them killed Celeste, just for being in the wrong parking lot at the wrong time, and if the Law won’t act to avenge her, then Lacklan Walker will bring his own brand of justice to bear: 9 mm Justice.

KILL: FOUR

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 13

What do you do when what you most crave in life is peace and the warmth of a family, but all life has taught you is how to fight and how to kill? What do you do when you have turned your back on violence and killing, when you’ve started to make that home, and the enemy you thought was dead comes knocking at your door? For Lacklan Walker, ten year veteran of the SAS, that question had only one answer. You go in fighting. But unfortunately it wasn’t that easy. Because the enemy he thought was dead, was a lot less dead than he’d thought. And when he turns to his old friend Jim Redbeard for help, he finds that his old enemy, Omega, have been playing a very dark game indeed, and if he is to defeat them he will have to face them on their own turf, where they are strongest. In a mission that takes him half way across the world, to the deserts of Namibia and the Western Cape of South Africa, to Cameroon, Cadiz and Oxford, this is Lacklan’s toughest challenge yet: a challenge that could well cost him everything…

DEATH IN FREEDOM

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 14

It should have been a simple drive, from Malaga Cove in LA , to Weston, outside Boston.

But it didn’t work out that way.

Maybe it was because Lacklan had his mind on the plans he’d been discussing with Jim Redbeard in Los Angeles, plans to assassinate high ranking Russian and Chinese officials - the last remaining members of the Omega cabal; or maybe it was because he was thinking about Marni, shot in the stomach in Oxford as they were planning to make their life together. Or maybe it was just the deep, dark Wyoming night, but whatever it was, something made Lacklan turn left, when he should have turned right.

And left took him high into the hills, among the deep pine forests, to the town of Freedom. Freedom, where every house had a white picket fence. Freedom, where the streets were clean and everybody smiled. Freedom, where they’d had the same mayor and the same town council for almost fifty years. Freedom, where there was zero crime…

He planned to stay the night at Missy’s hotel, while the local garage charged up his car. He was, after all, on the clock, with an important appointment to keep. But when he witnessed the local school teacher being arrested and beaten for teaching that the world was round, everything changed.

Lacklan decided to stay…

ENDGAME

OMEGA SERIES - BOOK 15

Captain Lacklan Walker, son of a Boston Brahmin, spent ten years in the British SAS, nursing his hatred for his father, and learning how to kill – a skill at which he is the best among the best. Yet when his father was on his death bed, Lacklan made him two promises: that he would find and protect Marni, his own childhood sweetheart, and that he would destroy Omega, a shadowy organization of elite billionaires who seek to control world events, the world economy, and the world’s future. An organization of which his father was a leading member. Three years down the line and both Omega and Marni lie dying. Only one branch of the organization survives, the branch that controls Russia and China, and Lacklan is out to finish them forever. It is no longer just the promise he made to his father. This is payback, for everything they have taken from him. This is a journey of revenge that will take him and his Comrade Njal across the Bering Straits, in a grueling, perilous journey through Siberia, to Moscow, Japan and eventually to the Gobi desert. There, in an explosive final conflict, Lacklan will finally confront his darkest demons, and the hideous truth about Omega…

TWO BARE ARMS

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 2

It was November in New York. It was raining, it was cold and the trees all looked like skeleton’s hands. And Detective John Stone was having a problem with habeas corpus, because all there was of the body, was two bare arms. Two bare arms that somebody, twelve years ago, had put in a lock up in the East Bronx. What they had done with the rest of the woman, nobody knew. But as Stone and Dehan start to investigate, two things become clear: whoever killed the woman, wanted her arms to be found, as a boast, as a challenge. And that meant they were dealing with a psychopath – a serial killer. But who –the biker with a taste for beating up women? Or his best pal the Satanist and devotee of Crowley? Or perhaps the neurotic IT freak who spent his leisure hours surfing the net for porn? Or maybe somebody else…? One thing Stone understands clearly, whoever it is, is a master of misdirection…

GARDEN OF THE DAMNED

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 3

When the body of a tramp was found in a dumpster on Lafayette and Bryant in the Bronx, with no papers and no ID, the case was filed as unsolved – another victim nobody cared about, shot by some punk nobody cared about. That was twelve years ago. Then Detective Stone notices that the ‘tramp’ had a hundred dollar haircut and manicured nails. That makes him curious. He wants to know, who dresses a murder victim up as a tramp, then leaves them in full view in a dumpster? But the answers he gets are not the ones he expects, and before long their investigation leads Stone and Dehan to St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, and the darkest recesses of the human soul. It also leads them to some of the most powerful men in New York. Some, like Conor Hagan, head of the Irish Mob, are known criminals. But others are not… Stone’s problem is deciding which of them are just criminals, and which are truly evil. That is, until ghosts start appearing from Dehan’s past. Then things get complicated…

LET US PREY

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 4

It seemed to be a cold case like any other. So much so that Stone and Dehan hadn’t even considered reviewing it – until private investigator Karl Baxter requested a copy of the police file. Then Stone got curious. Why did a second rate PI in the Bronx want to look into the case of a low life petty criminal found tied to a chair in his apartment, beaten and shot through the heart? And that question led to other questions, like, whose was second pool of blood on the floor? If there was a second victim, where was the body? Unfortunately, a chat with Baxter only raises more questions that threaten to drive Stone crazy: who is the mysterious Tamara Gunthersen? And what was the gig she did for the even more mysterious Geronimo dos Santos, back in 2015? At every turn the questions get deeper, and the women more tempting - and more dangerous. Until the strain on Stone and Dehan’s partnership threatens to make it snap. Then Stone will be on his own…

THE SINS OF THE FATHER

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 5

When Silvie Martin moves to New York from Texas with her husband, Simon, and their one year-old daughter, Mary, she is filled with the joy and hope she derives from their shared faith. But no sooner have they moved into their new home, which backs on to their church, than her husband is brutally murdered before her very eyes. The only trouble is, the shock has completely erased her memory… Now, eighteen years later, Detectives Stone and Dehan have to piece together a crime where their prime witness remembers nothing, and the suspects are as bizarre as they are unlikely: Reverend Paul Truelove, bombastic and irresistible to women, Humberto, the mysterious, shambling freak who speaks a language only he understands, El Chato, the Mexican housebreaker, and even Sylvie herself… But Stone and Dehan know, where sex and religion mix, nothing is ever simple. And the deeper they investigate, the more convinced they are, there is something they are not seeing…

STRANGE AND SINISTER PATH

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 6

There is nothing unusual about a young Catholic girl from the Bronx winding up raped, beaten, strangled and decapitated – unless she winds up that way in Lefthand Canyon, in the Colorado Rockies, where there hasn’t been a murder since 1922. Then it’s unusual enough to become a problem for the sheriff of Lee County. And when he finds no blood at the scene and no physical evidence, it becomes more than a problem. It becomes a headache – for five long years. That’s when he bats it back to the Bronx, to the 43rd precinct and right onto Detectives Stone and Dehan’s desk. Let them deal with it. But Lee County is one of the remotest parts of the USA, and Stone finds his pool of suspects limited, to say the least. Was it Greg, the tough, plain-talking rancher? Was it Ingrid and Alfredo, the bitter, puritanical in-laws? Or somebody in the off-grid, dope farming community at the Shack? Or was it somebody else, somebody completely different…?

THE HEART TO KILL

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 7

Dave Thorndike, an investigative reporter on the New York Telegraph, is in the habit of disappearing for weeks at a time. So when he vanishes in the winter of 2008, investigating the story of his life, nobody worries – until he shows up shot in the head with his own 9mm - no laptop and no story. It wasn’t much to go on in 2008, but when Stone and Dehan pick it up ten years later, the case is as cold as the icy winds blowing off the East River. Both his wife and his mistress had motive, but the killing has all the hallmarks of an execution. Things get deep when Dehan realizes Thorndike’s investigation was into non other than Senator Carol Hennessy, head of the Hennessy Foundation and presidential candidate - a woman whose opponents tended to die young. But that’s not the only thing she notices. She also sees Shelly Pierce, the sexy new editor of the NY Telegraph, coming on to Stone. A fact to which Stone seems totally blind…

UNNATURAL MURDER

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 8

It was not a cold case. Or was it…? Sebastian Acosta has been gunned down at three AM on a Saturday morning, sitting behind the wheel of a beaten up Toyota. The passenger door is open and a few paces away his pal, Luis Irizarry, lies with his life ebbing away through two gunshot wound in his chest. It should be a red hot case, except that fifteen years earlier, Rosario Rojas was raped and strangled in that self same house, the house Luis was crawling toward, the house that belonged to Angela Rojas, Rosario’s daughter. Rosario, who was like a sister to Marta Flores, Detective Dehan’s mother. Things get more complicated when it emerges that Rosario had started to get involved in a set whose morals Marta had considered a little too lax, a bit too broad-minded; when it emerges that the two boys who just got shot are the sons of two of the couples that made up that set. But then it turns out, this is just the tip of the iceberg, in this old, cold case…

FIRE FROM HEAVEN

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 9

It wasn’t just the twenty years since Danny Brown’s death that made it the hardest case of their careers: it was that the manner of his death was, quite simply, impossible. His body was reduced to ash from his neck to his ankles, in the middle of Soundview Park. His unburned feet were still in his flip-flops. His unburned head was just eighteen inches away, where it had apparently rolled; and his genitals too were unburned. To make matters worse, though it had rained the night before, there were no footprints to be found - anywhere. Detective Stone keeps an open mind, but his partner, Detective Dehan, is convinced there is a logical, terrestrial explanation for the gruesome murder. The X-Files, after all, exist only in fiction, don’t they? Then they start to hear about the lights in the sky that night, and the threatening visits the FBI paid to the witnesses that saw them – and Detective Dehan starts to wonder: how was Danny Brown killed – and above all, by whom…? This is a cold case Dehan and Stone might never solve…

TO KILL UPON A KISS

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 10

When Wayne Harris contacts Detectives Stone and Dehan, of the 43rd Precinct’s cold case unit, and tells them he has information relating to the Westchester Angel murder two years earlier, they agree to go and see him – at Rikers Island. It soon becomes clear that Wayne has genuine information about the murder, information he could only have if he had been there. But it is also clear that Wayne is not giving anything away for free. Wayne wants something in return. He wants his liberty. Stone believes Wayne Harris belongs where he is, behind bars, but as he and Dehan begin to look into the case they soon realize the horrific truth: they are dealing with a psychopathic serial killer who will stop at nothing to sate his lust for blood. And the only clue they have to his identity lies with Wayne Harris. Yet, doing a deal with him, may be the worst mistake of their careers…

MURDER MOST SCOTTISH

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 11

When detectives John Stone and Carmen Dehan who run the Cold Cases Department at the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx choose their honeymoon together, there are three things they are very clear on: there must be good steak and whisky, it must be remote, and for two blissful weeks they must forget about work, about cold cases and about murder. So a small island off the north coast of Scotland in a 16th century castle seems to be just the job. After all, two out of three isn’t bad. At first the place seems idyllic: The wild landscapes are breathtaking, the northern lights otherworldly and the fire-side talk, fuelled by good whisky and good Angus steak, is fascinating. Maybe a bit too fascinating when it leads to a forty year old mystery about a man murdered, shot with a .38 in a locked room in circumstances which are, quite simply, impossible. And when the island is cut off by a storm, and an identical murder is committed, well, what are two cold case cops on honeymoon to do…?

THE BUTCHER OF WHITECHAPEL

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 12

It was the first time John Stone had been back to London for fifteen years. Last time had been on an exchange program between the NYPD and Scotland Yard: an exchange of skills and experience that was supposed to last six months, but went one for a year and a half. This time he was on honeymoon with his partner and wife, Carmen Dehan. And it seemed, as they prepared to return home, that history was repeating itself. Because, as they were leaving the hotel for the airport, the call came; the call that said they had to stay, the call that said the killer was back, the one he’d been searching for fifteen years ago, the one who haunted all his secret nightmares - the one that got away. So now he has to share his dark secrets, and his nightmares, with his new bride. And as the horror that he thought he’d laid to rest, rises up again, the question that haunts him is, will Dehan survive the ordeal?

LITTLE DEAD RIDING HOOD

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 13

An eighteen-year-old girl sets out one November night to walk five blocks down Gleason Avenue to her boyfriend’s house. He calls her and she tells him she’s on her way. It’s a walk that should take ten minutes, but she never arrives. When she does turn up, it’s five days later, washed up on the banks of the River Bronx, in Soundview Park, strangled to death. The detective who investigates the murder, a friend of the family, finds no forensic evidence, nothing of interest in her phone records, no witnesses to the abduction or the murder. Nothing. The case goes cold. Until her brother, Samuel, comes forward with new evidence he has found. And then the cases is handed to Detectives Stone and Dehan of the 43rd Precinct. They start asking the difficult questions, like how did she get into the river in the first place, and then the case starts heating up again…

TRICK OR TREAT

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 14

Sue Benedict wasn’t giving out treats, so she got the trick. It was a hell of a trick. She was raped and murdered in her apartment after attending a Halloween party with a bunch of art students. The killer did not use a condom or gloves, the CSI team got a perfect DNA profile and two perfect thumbprints from her throat, a witness saw her admit the killer to her apartment at two-thirty AM that night. It should have been a slam dunk. The only problem was, the DNA profile and the thumb prints didn’t match anyone on CODIS or IAFIS, or anyone at the party. The killer, who made no effort to hide his identity, had vanished without a trace – just like the one witness who might actually have known what happened that night. And twelve years later the case is as cold as Sue Benedict, and the icy December wind coming in off the East River. So cold in fact that Detective Dehan of the NYPD thinks this may be the one case she and her partner, Detective Stone, will never crack. A hell of a trick.

BLOOD INTO WINE

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 15

The weather was freezing, but the case wasn’t cold, it was too hot. It looked open and shut: Dr Agnes Shine had shot Dr Jose Robles eight times with a Sig Sauer Tacops p226, while they were drinking Californian wine in her living room; then she’d disappeared. But Assistant DA Costas Varufakis didn’t like it and he was leaning on Deputy Inspector John Newman of the 43rd Precinct to have somebody look a bit deeper. That somebody was Detectives John Stone, and his partner Carmen Dehan. And when they started to look, everything looked wrong: the motive was wrong, the weapon was wrong, the location was wrong – even Assistant DA Varufakis was wrong. But when they discover the nature of Robles’ relationship with Dr Alicia Cobos, and when the forensic team discover Robles’ deleted Telegram app, thing go from wrong to very, very dark. Yet the two question on Stone’s mind are: Is it all smoke and mirrors? And where is Dr Agnes Shine?

JACK IN THE BOX

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 16

It was a real Jack in the box. Only this box was a UPS delivery to crime novelist Helena Magnusson, and the Jack was Jack Connors – her husband; or at least his head. The rest of him was probably in the East River somewhere. When Detectives Stone and Dehan of the 43rd Precinct reopen the case it isn’t just cold - with no forensic evidence and no witnesses, it’s nigh impossible to solve - and in an investigation that takes them from the Bronx, through Connecticut, right up to Malone on the Canadian border, the cold case team’s list of suspects only seems to grow longer: Is it Connors’ lover, the mysterious Penelope Peach? Or her jilted lover, ruthless South African arms dealer, Grant Shaw? Or is it Helena’s creative writing student, Lenny dos Santos, now doing time for murder? Or is it none of them? But in this cold case, these questions are just the tip of the iceberg. Detective Dehan will discover that for her, the box holds a darker, more terrible revelation than she could possibly imagine…

THE FALL MOON

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 17

When Karl and Christen Redfern were brutally murdered in their apartment in the Bronx, a lot of things were never explained, like why he was stabbed only twice, with clinical precision, but she was stabbed twenty times in the heart, in a crazed frenzy; like what happened to their Chevy Impala, and why Christen’s sister, Ingrid, had never reported it missing. But the biggest mystery of all was perhaps where Karl and Christen’s daughter Amy had disappeared to, along with her boyfriend, Charlie, on the very night of her parents’ murder. These were the questions Detective Carmen Dehan of the 43rd Precinct had been asking herself for the past six years. But when she persuaded her partner, Detective John Stone, to take this as their next cold case, he was anything but prepared for the passion with which she would then pursue that investigation – an investigation that would take them from the Bronx to Iowa, and then Arizona and the Mexican border, an investigation with layers of dark secrets that would ultimately bring them face to face with Sinaloa’s most ruthless Sicario, and test their relationship to the very limit.

BLOOD IN BABYLON

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 18

Detective John Stone of the NYPD heads up the 43rd’s cold case unit, in the Bronx. In a place like the Bronx you get a lot of cold cases. So Stone has one golden rule for investigating a case: it must have some remote chance of being solved. So what made him choose the Al’ Chester case, the sixty year-old schizophrenic murdered on his birthday, twelve years earlier, alone in his apartment - a case where there was zero forensic evidence? The fact was, it should have been a slam-dunk. They had the time of death - ten thirty on the Friday night; cause of death - a single stab wound to the heart; motive - half a million bucks; prime suspect – a gang member seen on the night of the murder trying to break into the victim’s house...only one thing was missing.

DEATH IN DEXTER

DEAD COLD SERIES - BOOK 19

There hadn’t been a crime in Dexter, upstate New York, since 1865. It was a long time coming, but when it came, on the 21st September, 2012, it was ugly. It was murder. It was the murder of a seventeen year-old girl, beaten, raped and strangled, then stabbed in the heart with a hunting knife. The DNA recovered from the corpse was contaminated and corrupted, but the DNA recovered from her clothes at home was clear. It was her stepfather’s, just like the fingerprints on her arms and her face where she had been beaten. It should heave been an open and shut case, but there was a problem. When seventeen year-old Debbie was being murdered, her step father was drinking beer with the deputy. So who killed Debbie Smith? Seven years after the murder, the sheriff of Franklin County wants an answer. And he’s heard that the 43rd in the Bronx has a team who specialize in cracking cold cases. But as the fall sets in in upstate new York, this case may be just too cold to crack. Or too hot…
